‘Hey, wake up,’ Mori said throwing a pebble through the iron bars. It hit his sleeping neighbour on the head. The man scratched his ear, grumbled, and returned to his dreams. Mori threw another pebble of mortar he had picked out of the wall. The man ignored him again. He cursed the man and turned to his other fellow jail mate. Mori leaned down to find another bit of stone.

‘Don’t throw a pebble at me,’ the man said in a droll tone. He sat against the wall, his long, knotted hair hanging limp over his dirt smeared face.

‘Someone is awake. Good. Why are you in here?’

‘Same reason anyone else would be. Disobeyed Lord Miyoshi,’ the man said with a smile. Dark teeth peeked through greasy hair.

‘What did he order you to do?’

‘What he didn’t more like. I made a few families nearest where the monsters usually come from to move to the next prefecture over. Miyoshi hadn’t wanted to disturb the populace to avoid chaos or disruption o…
