Kota prodded his cheek. Greenish hues and blue tints collided together beneath a red and swollen eye. He sucked air between his teeth. The swelling had spread around his eye and across his nose. Blood crusted over a split in his eyelid and in one nostril. The boy sniffed.

‘Stop touching it,’ Sayo barked. ‘You got hit. You got up. Don’t cry,’ she said. ‘Women hate criers.’

Kota furrowed his brow as best he could but instead of looking annoyed he winked and opened the cuts around his swollen eye. He hissed again. ‘It hurts.’

‘And it’s going to hurt for days. Shut up. You have your sword, you have your life, be thankful,’ Sayo added.

‘We are going to rescue Ano. This was a good test. You failed but you did not die which means you can succeed in the future,’ the woman pursed her lips and caressed Shiro.
